Overview — Best Hostels in Budapest

A man and a woman sitting at a bar

Budapest hostels come in various shapes and sizes, each with its own vibe, amenities, and quality. There's a hostel for everyone's taste, and they usually fall into one of five categories.

Party Hostels

  • These hostels are buzzing with energy and a love for good times. Alcohol flows freely, but due to district sound-level regulations, they usually quiet down after midnight. The party crowd then typically heads to a ruin bar to keep the fun going. Expect additional activities like pub crawls and boat tours for an extra fee.

Hotel-like Hostels

  • If you're looking for a no-frills, economical stay similar to a hotel, these hostels are a great choice. Ideal for those who prefer privacy over social interaction, they offer a comfortable bed and essential amenities.

Homely Hostels

  • These smaller hostels, usually managed by one or two staff members, offer a cozy, home-like environment. The atmosphere is more personal and intimate than larger, commercial hostels.

Social Hostels

  • Similar to a college dorm, these hostels are perfect for meeting new people without the constant party atmosphere. They foster a lively, relaxed, and energetic environment encouraging social interaction.

Digital Nomad Hostels

  • Tailored for the modern traveler, these hostels boast fast Wi-Fi and dedicated workspaces. Recognizable for their minimalist, office-like design, they often feature an in-house bar or café, providing the perfect blend of work and leisure.

Things to Consider When Choosing A Hostel in Budapest

A room with bunk beds and luggage on the floor

When selecting the ideal hostel in Budapest, several decision-making factors come into play:

Location

  • All the hostels on the list are centrally located, offering easy access to Budapest's lively city center, nightlife, and infamous ruin bars. Prioritize hostels in quieter side streets away from noisy avenues and tram lines for a good night's sleep.

Price

  • Budget-friendly shared rooms in Budapest range from 8€-15€. Private rooms suitable for solo travelers, couples, families, or groups typically cost 40€-80€ per night.
  • Keep in mind, prices can rise during weekends, the high season (May-Sept), and special occasions like Christmas, New Year's Eve, or the Sziget festival.

Privacy

  • Seek out hostels offering fewer beds per room, private bathrooms, and bed curtains for an added layer of privacy.

Hostel Type

  • If you're a social butterfly or party-lover, the vibrant party hostels in Budapest are right up your alley. However, if you prefer tranquility and a more mature crowd, plenty of other options exist.

Amenities

  • The comfort and convenience of your stay can be enhanced with features like a 24/7 front desk, shared kitchen, free bed linen and towels, complimentary food or coffee in the kitchen, private bathrooms, secure luggage storage, bed amenities (like curtains, item tray, lamp, and an outlet), and a laptop-friendly work area in the lounge.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Maverick Urban Lodge Review is based on a 1-night (2022 December) and 1-month stay (March 2023).
🎥 Video: Watch my video review of Maverick Urban Lodge.

Maverick Urban Lodge is the place to be for comfort seekers looking for a short or long-term stay. It's like your own college dorm room, perfect for even month-long stays.

It's not a party hostel, but there are plenty of chances to be social and meet people.

In terms of pricing, Maverick offers exceptional value for money, with off-season rates starting from just 9€ per night for a bunk bed. I stayed here for 30 days in March for 280 euros.

Even in the high season, prices remain reasonable considering the quality of the hostel.

Room

A long narrow hallway with a coat hanging on the wall
  • The rooms resemble a modern dorm setup, equipped with large lockers, privacy curtains, and high-quality beds.

Bed

A white bed with a curtain hanging over it
  • The 4-bed setup was comfortable and the bed was great, complete with a privacy curtain, item box, light, socket, and no annoying squeaks.

Locker

A couple of suitcases are sitting in a yellow cabinet
  • Depending on the type of room you have, you can access a large, secure locker using either your passcard or a padlock (available for a fee at the reception).
  • Some rooms have drawers in addition to the lockers.

Bathroom

A bathroom with a shower and a trash can
  • The bathrooms at this place are excellent. On my first visit, I had access to a clean and spacious shared bathroom with a fantastic shower.
  • During my second longer stay, my room came with a smaller yet equally impressive private bathroom.

Kitchen

A kitchen with blue cabinets and white walls
  • The kitchen could use more space and better equipment.
  • It feels cramped with limited cooking space and a fridge that's always packed. This is the one area that needs improvement.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Hostel One Review is based on a 1-night stay (2022 December) and several revisits to the bar.
🎥 Video: Watch my video review of Hostel One Budapest.

Hostel One Budapest is an excellent choice for those who love socializing, making friends, and partying.

Regarding cost, Hostel One might be pricier than other Budapest hostels, but you get your money's worth if you value the opportunity to socialize and have an outgoing party experience.

Location

A map of a city with a red circle in the middle of it
  • Hostel One boasts a prime location in the 7th District (also called the Jewish Quarter) near the airport shuttle stop, nightlife, and city attractions.

Noise Levels

A bird's eye view of a city with tall buildings
  • Noise levels are reasonable, with partying ending around 11-12 pm, ensuring a peaceful sleep.

Room

A room with bunk beds and clothes on the floor
  • I had a quiet room with ample space to move around.

Bed

A woman sitting on a bed using a laptop computer
  • My bed was great in many ways, with a privacy curtain, light, and socket, and it didn't make any squeaking sounds.
  • However, it was missing a spot to put my belongings at night, although certain beds (appearently) have a black item tray as seen on the photo above.

Locker

A bathroom with a white door and a black handle
  • There are secure lockers in the room to ensure the safety of your belongings.
  • Padlocks are provided free of charge.

Bathroom

A bathroom with two sinks and a urinal
  • The only noteworthy downside was in the showers - water temperature can fluctuate unpredictably, and the thanks to a poorly placed sensor, the lights constantly turn off.

Kitchen

A kitchen with a chalkboard on the wall
  • The kitchen is satisfactory, but it lacks oven. It is quite small, and if a few people get hungry at the same time, it can get crowded quickly.

Miscellaneous

Additional Secure Storage

  • There is a secure wooden storage area beneath the bed apart from the lockers.

Best Value Hostel
7.8/10 +6900 reviews (Booking.com)

A group of people sitting at tables in a room

長所:

✔️ Best Value — Off-season rates start at just 8€ per night which includes a free breakfast and a discount dinner.

✔️ Staff — The staff is helpful and efficient and are available 24/7.

短所:

Quality of Life — The quality, comfort, privacy and cleanliness of the entire place were mediocre.
No Free Padlock — Padlocks are not included in room lockers, but you can buy one for a reasonable price (3€).
Impersonal — No social atmosphere, personal touch, or events (except in the dining area).
Loud — Avenue Hostel is next to a larger intersection with trams passing by. Bring earplugs.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Avenue Hostel Review is based on a 1-night stay (2022 December).
🎥 Video: Watch my video review of Avenue Hostel Budapest.

Avenue Hostel is the go-to hostel for budget-conscious travelers seeking significant savings on both accommodation and meals in Budapest.

The hostel's key selling point is its budget-friendly offerings. Starting at just 9€ per night, guests can enjoy free breakfast and discounted dinner meals with a minimum 3€ bar spend. This arrangement is particularly enticing in light of Hungary's high food inflation.

While Avenue Hostel doesn't offer luxury, it delivers practicality and affordability. Its modest offerings are balanced by its wallet-friendly pricing, making it a solid choice for budget-focused travelers

📝 Editor's note: The 10-bed "veiled" room I stayed in, along with its shared bathrooms, was not great. However, the rest of the hostel offers way nicer rooms with 4-8 or 12 beds, though they are more expensive. In this light, this hostel deserves a more favourable consideration than what I gave it here.

Location

A map of a city with lots of buildings
  • Its central location in the 6th District near Oktogon offers easy access to the nightlife, Andrássy Avenue and public transport options.

Noise Levels

A city street filled with lots of traffic at night
  • You can expect typical hostel noises from other guests. There's high street noise from the a busy avenue nearby, so earplugs are mandatory.

Check-in

A man standing at a counter in a restaurant
  • The front desk at this hostel is open 24/7 for your convenience, so you can check in anytime. You'll need to show your ID or passport at check-in and receive your passcard.
  • With your passcard, you can access your room or sign up for events and tours at the reception.

Vibe & People

A group of people sitting at tables in a room
  • Guests here enjoy a complemenetary breakfast and discounted dinner for 3€ bar spend.
  • You'll have the opportunity to share casual meals with anyone you find interesting at the mess hall during the aformentioned meals.
  • You can also sign up for drink games, events and tours at reception.

Room

A bunk bed in a small room with curtains
  • The standard rooms are equipped with a veil in the middle for a semblance of privacy, metal framed beds and item lockers.

Bed

A room with bunk beds and luggage on the floor
  • I didn't have much privacy in my 10-bed room since beds have no curtains. However, I found out that there are better room options with beds that have curtains already installed.
  • Overall, the bed itself was decent - it had a light and socket, but no item tray. It was was clean and had a sturdy metal frame.

Locker

A bunk bed in a room with a blue wall
  • There was a locker that was a suitable size for my laptop and backpack, but my luggage was too big to fit inside at the same time.
  • Padlocks are available at the reception for a reasonable price.

Bathroom

A bathroom with a toilet and a sink
  • The cleanliness and comfort of the two shared bathrooms in our living quarters were mediocre.
  • One bathroom was poorly designed with the shower located next to the toilet, causing it to get wet. The other bathroom was spacious but didn't seem very hygienic.
  • There were at least 20 people for two 1-person bathrooms, so people had to wait for their turn.
  • The rooms without veils have better bathroom facilities!

Kitchen

A kitchen filled with lots of counter top space
  • The main kitchen is perfect in all aspects. There were additional kitchens on each floor.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Flow Spaces Review is based on a 1-night stay (2022 December).

Flow Spaces presents a beautiful blend between a hostel's sociable atmosphere and a hotel's calm, perfect for those desiring a middle ground.

With a vibe reminiscent of a college dorm, this hostel is ideal for budget travelers seeking a balanced experience.

Starting at a wallet-friendly 9€ per night, Flow Spaces offers excellent value.

With a welcoming and sociable atmosphere, a quiet workspace, and a well-equipped kitchen, Flow Spaces offers a unique hostel experience worth considering.

Location

A map of a city with a red circle in the middle
  • Flow Spaces is in a peaceful 9th district of the city center, just a few minutes walk from Central Market Hall and the airport shuttle bus stop.

Noise Levels

An aerial view of a city with a red line
  • You can expect typical hostel noises from other guests, but street noise is low.
  • The hostel is near a quiet 1-lane road where buses or trolleys don't pass by.

Check-in

A person sitting at a desk in a room
  • They have 2-3 receptions available 24/7 - checking in was a breeze. They'll ask for your ID and give you a passcard for your room.
  • Note that the hostel has no elevator, so be prepared to climb a three flights of stairs.
  • The hotel offers free luggage storage both before check-in and after check-out. Additionally, they also have secure lockers available for an extra fee.

Vibe & People

A living room with a green rug and a book shelf
  • The winter streets of Budapest can be harsh, but I felt like entering an oasis in a desert after setting foot in Flow Spaces! It's so welcoming!
  • The staff was very friendly and helpful.
  • Most guests were in their low twenties, but I saw people of all ages.
  • The main dining area/lounge is a great spot to eat, cook and socialize with other travelers.

Room

A room that has a bunch of curtains in it
  • The rooms, while somewhat small, feature large, comfortable beds equipped with privacy curtains and a lockable storage box with a free padlock.

Bed

A small bed in a small room with a red wall
  • My bed was comfortable and had a privacy curtain, light, socket, and storage box. The box was in the way when getting onto the bed.
  • I found stray female hair on the pillow under the pillow sheet despite it being washed. Hygiene was acceptable in the bathroom and the entire hostel otherwise.
  • The bed had a wooden frame and tended to squeak.

Locker

A wooden box sitting on top of a blue and white floor
  • A secure stash can be found under the bed, and the padlock is included for free.

Bathroom

A bathroom with three sinks and three mirrors
  • My room did not have a private bathroom and instead, I had to use a co-ed communal bathroom.
  • Unfortunately, there wasn't a private spot to get dressed as you either had to use the wet shower or the toilet.

Kitchen

A man sitting at a table in a restaurant
  • The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped with kitchenware, including an oven. There is free food and coffee left by others for you to use.
  • The fridges were messy.

Miscellaneous

  • I discovered that both the dining room tables and the quiet workspace with my laptop were great for getting work done.
  • There is a balcony available for those who need to smoke.

長所:

✔️ Excellent Rooms — Simple, quiet and clean room, with a mind-blowing shower.
✔️ Secure Storage — They happily stored my laptop at the secure item storage at the reception.
✔️ Work Area — The lounge has a superb laptop-friendly work area.

短所:

Bed Linens and Towels— They aren't free, as they cost an additional 1150HUF (~3€).
Item "Cage" — Padlock is NOT included for room item cage.
Dirty Pillow — My pillow could've used a replacement, but the hostel overall is hygenic.
Blank Breakfast — They serve a typical hotel breakfast for 8€ (optional).

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My A&O Budapest City Hostel Review is based on a 2-night stay (2022 November).

A&O City Hostel is the go-to choice for budget-minded guests who value comfort and quiet over a buzzing social scene.

Starting from an affordable 7€ per night, A&O offers excellent value for money. However, keep in mind that an extra charge applies for bed linens (around 3€).

Despite a few downsides, such as the pillow cleanliness and the bed linen fee, A&O's cost-effectiveness and convenience make it an appealing option for no-frills travelers prioritizing a tranquil environment and workspace facilities.

Location

A map of a city with lots of red dots
  • Slightly outside the heart of Budapest but still centrally located, it's a stone's throw away from the vibrant Jewish district and convenient transport links.

Noise Levels

An aerial view of a city with buildings and a red line
  • While you may hear some noise from other guests, the street noise is minimal at this hostel. It is situated near a peaceful one-lane intersection that is not frequented by buses or trolleys.

Check-in

A woman standing behind a counter in a store
  • The receptionists at the hostel were helpful, friendly, and efficient.
  • There are always 1-2 receptionists available 24/7, which made the check-in process very easy.
  • You have to pay a 3 euro "bed linen fee" or bring your own.

Vibe & People

A long hallway with white walls and grey carpet
  • This place has the appearance and ambiance of a hotel, but offers prices similar to a hostel.
  • Although there is some socializing, it leans more towards a hotel atmosphere.
  • It is a suitable choice for a short business trip or if you plan on being out exploring for most of the day and night.

Room

A room with bunk beds and a desk
  • The rooms are minimalistic and clean, with a top-notch private bathroom and storage "cage".
  • Despite not feeling large, the room has a spacious enough middle area.

Bed

A room filled with bunk beds and orange stools
  • The bed is decent, but lacks a curtain for privacy. It has a convenient storage compartment on the side, as well as a night lamp and an electrical outlet.
  • The bed had a solid metal frame and wasn't squeaky.
  • My pillow was dirty, and I had to replace it, but I'm sure it was an isolated incident because the hygiene standards at the hostel were excellent overall.

Locker

A room with bunk beds and a stool
  • You can store your items in a secure storage "cage", but you will need to bring your own padlock or purchase one at the reception desk.

Bathroom

A bathroom with a sink and a shower
  • The room has a private shower and toilet that are separate. Although small, both are clean and well-maintained.
  • The hotel's shower is exceptional and the best I've experienced among Budapest hostels.

Kitchen

Two women in a kitchen talking and laughing
  • The kitchen is near the elevator and can be hard to find. It's not very big but seems to have everything you need, except an oven. Keep in mind that it's the only kitchen in this huge hostel, so it can get crowded.

Miscellaneous

Cool Workspace

A man sitting at a table in a large room
  • The hostel's lounge has a fantastic laptop workspace, a designated breakfast area, and ample space to relax and unwind.
  • The (optional) breakfast provided seemed to consist of generic and uninspiring hotel fare, which I found to be overpriced at 8€.

クイックファクト

6. Wombat's City Hostel

Best Low-key Party Hostel — Best Location
8.1/10 +1400 reviews (Booking.com)
8.7/10 +12200 reviews (Hostelworld)
A room that has a bunch of furniture in it

長所:

✔️ Welcoming — Easy going social atmosphere, easy to meet people.

✔️ Not Noisy —The hostel is quiet despite being a party hostel. You can have a good night's rest.

✔️ Staff — Front desk available 24/7. Secure luggage storage room.

短所:

Price — The prices could be more reasonable. I didn't feel the hostel offered anything special to justify the price.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Wombat's City Hostel Review is based on a 1-night stay (2022 December).

Wombat's Budapest is a hub for young travelers who want to experience Budapest's nightlife. This place pulses with youthful energy and a laid-back ambiance, making it an ideal low-key party hostel.

Regarding pricing, Wombat's is considered pricier than other options in Budapest, with bunk beds starting at 17€/night in the off-season and private rooms from 65€/night.

While its prime location is a major selling point, the hostel's offerings might not entirely justify the above-average prices for some guests.

The other downside at Wombat's, other than the higher price point, is the rather mundane quality of some facilities. The bathrooms, for instance, while clean, are just ordinary.

However, the quality of the guests was a definite highlight, and the opportunity to meet and party with interesting travelers from around the globe more than made up for these minor issues.

Location

A map of a city with a red circle in the middle of it
  • Located on Király Street in the heart of Budapest's nightlife district, Wombat's provides excellent access to the city's main attractions and various public transport options.

Noise Levels

An aerial view of a city with red buildings
  • The hostel is quiet with typical sounds of hostel life. However, there is no or little noise from traffic as the rooms face an inner courtyard or a peaceful one-lane street.

Check-in

A man sitting at a counter in front of a vending machine
  • This hostel has a 24/7 front desk for easy check-in. They'll ask for ID and give you a passcard for your room.
  • You can also sign up for events and tours at reception.

Vibe & People

A room that has a bunch of furniture in it
  • The quality of the guests was a definite highlight, and the opportunity to meet and party with interesting travelers from around the globe is something I still fondly remember to this day.
  • Although this is a party hostel, parties do not appear to take place within the premises as people usually head out to the Jewish district to party.

Room

A room with bunk beds and a mirror
  • The comfort level of the 8-bed room was on par with other hostels.

Bed

A room with bunk beds and a ladder
  • The beds were basic but clean, featuring a lamp and a socket, though no privacy curtain or item tray.

Locker

A room with bunk beds and bunk beds in it
  • The lockers were small, so I could only store my backpack and laptop inside and my luggage outside.
  • I spent 10 minutes figuring out the funky opening mechanism (hint: you have to push the button with your card).

Bathroom

A bathroom with a toilet, sink, and mirror
  • The room came with a private bathroom that was decent in terms of both cleanliness and size. While it wasn't particularly remarkable, it got the job done.

Kitchen

A kitchen with a table and chairs in it
  • The building only has one kitchen, located on the ground floor. The kitchen is quite large, modern, and well-equipped, with all the necessary appliances including an oven. It would even be suitable for recording footage for a cooking show if desired.
  • I had the nicest impromptu dinner here with some travelling Canadians.

Miscellaneous

Organized Events & Bar Crawls

  • You can sign up for some great bar crawls at the reception. I tried it with my roomies I just met, and it was a blast!

7. Zen Hostel

Best Cozy & Homely Hostel
9.0/10 +1200 reviews (Booking.com)
9.2/10 +100 reviews (Hostelworld)
A woman sitting on a couch in a living room

長所:

✔️ Staff — Julien was a great "1-person team" managing the entire hostel. She was friendly, helpful, and upbeat. She's the reason this hostel gets 9/10 ratings.
✔️ Welcoming — You could strike up conversations anywhere. The living room sofa was a great place to chat with others.
✔️ Feels Like Home — If you like the cozy-homely feel, this is heaven.

短所:

No 24/7 Check-In — Julien leaves at 9 pm. Checking in also took a long time.
Understaffed — Julien was juggling too many balls at once - she needed at least another person with her duties.
Not Secure — No lockable item stash available.
Not nomad-friendly — no facilities available like a workspace with a socket.

Summary & Overall Impression

💡 My Zen Hostel Review is based on a 1-night stay (2022 December).

Zen Hostel is a delightful retreat for those seeking a small, cozy place that feels more like a home than a hostel.

In terms of pricing, Zen Hostel is slightly above average. Bunk beds start at 13€/night, while private rooms begin at 32€/night. While not the best value-for-money, those who cherish a homey vibe and prime location will find Zen Hostel to be a worthwhile choice.

Location

A map of a city with a red circle in the middle of it
  • This hostel is located in the peaceful 9th district of the city center.
  • Although it may not be in the heart of the nightlife area like some other hostels, it is easily accessible by public transportation or a pleasant walk.
  • A few minutes walk will lead you to attractions like the Central Market Hall and the 100E airport shuttle bus stop.

Noise Levels

A city street filled with lots of traffic next to tall buildings
  • Noise from traffic is practically non-existent, though this could vary as some rooms face a busy avenue where trams pass by.

Check-in

A long narrow hallway with a mirror and plants
  • Julien (the sole staff member) manages the place alone and she is the most welcoming person in the world.
  • However, check-in took me around 10 minutes with two people ahead of me. Check-in is only available between 2 to 9 pm, which could be inconvenient if you arrive late.

Vibe & People

A woman sitting on a couch in a living room
  • For those seeking a quiet, homely retreat, Zen Hostel could be a cozy hideaway in the city's heart.
  • This hostel is ideal for those who value meaningful conversations with fellow guests, all while sipping a hot cup of tea on the comfy couch.
  • However, Zen Hostel isn't without its shortcomings. The hostel lacks the amenities, efficiency, and quality of life that larger hostel chains offer.
  • The building also lacks an elevator and with the hostel on the first floor, accessibility could pose a problem for some. The hostel's entrance is also tricky to spot, as evidenced by guests I saw struggling to find the door inside the building courtyard.

Room

A bedroom with bunk beds and a desk
  • Zen Hostel's rooms are spacious, accommodating up to 8-10 people with ample open space and a handy table.

Bed

A room filled with bunk beds and a table
  • The beds are clean and comfy, albeit they lack privacy curtains and are squeaky. They are quipped with a night lamp, socket, and item tray available.

Locker

A room with bunk beds and a table with chairs
  • Secure storage is not available, just a non-lockable wooden closet.

Bathroom

A washer and dryer in a small bathroom
  • The hostel had four bathrooms, two large and two small, each with unique features. However, the overall cleanliness and showers were only average.

Kitchen

A kitchen with a stove top oven sitting inside of it
  • The kitchen area was small and unremarkable but had all the necessary items, including a fridge, pots and pans, cutlery, a stove, and an oven.

8. Adagio Hostel 2.0 Basilica

A Solid Hotel-like Hostel
7.8/10 +2000 reviews (Booking.com)
