If you're planning a trip to Budapest and feeling overwhelmed with choosing a hostel, I'm here to help!

I stayed at eight different hostels in Budapest, including Wombat's City Hostel.

This article presents my review of Wombat's City Hostel Budapest, which I ranked as the sixth-best hostel on my best hostels list based on my personal experience.

Summary — Wombat's City Hostel Budapest Review

Who is this hostel for?

  • If you're looking to enjoy Budapest's nightlife and party scene, Wombat's location on Király street is an excellent choice.
  • Although advertised as a party hostel, it's more accurately described as a youth hostel.

What was the best part of staying here?

  • I enjoyed my stay in an 8-bed room with only two other guys. I went on a pub crawl and made great memories.
  • I also met a fantastic group of Canadian friends and had a meal with them in the kitchen.
  • The atmosphere here is incredibly laid-back.

What was the worst part of staying here?

  • I didn't have any specific complaints, but I thought the place was too expensive.
  • The room, bed, and shower were average. Despite that, the guests were of great quality.

Did I enjoy my stay here? Would I return?

  • While my experience was decent, I don't think I would choose to stay there again.
  • Although I don't have any major grievances, if I am looking to have a good time, I would prefer to go to Hostel One instead.

How much does it cost? Is it good value for money?

  • Although the prices are higher than average, the location of the hostel is perfect.
  • However, the amenities and services provided do not seem to justify the cost.
  • The starting price for bunk beds is 17€ per night, while private rooms start at 65€ per night.

Summary & Overall Impression

Wombat's Budapest is a hub for young travelers who want to experience Budapest's nightlife. This place pulses with youthful energy and a laid-back ambiance, making it an ideal low-key party hostel.

Regarding pricing, Wombat's is considered pricier than other options in Budapest, with bunk beds starting at 17€/night in the off-season and private rooms from 65€/night.

While its prime location is a major selling point, the hostel's offerings might not entirely justify the above-average prices for some guests.

The other downside at Wombat's, other than the higher price point, is the rather mundane quality of some facilities. The bathrooms, for instance, while clean, are just ordinary.

However, the quality of the guests was a definite highlight, and the opportunity to meet and party with interesting travelers from around the globe more than made up for these minor issues.

Location

  • Located on Király Street in the heart of Budapest's nightlife district, Wombat's provides excellent access to the city's main attractions and various public transport options.

Noise Levels

  • The hostel is quiet with typical sounds of hostel life. However, there is no or little noise from traffic as the rooms face an inner courtyard or a peaceful one-lane street.

Check-in

  • This hostel has a 24/7 front desk for easy check-in. They'll ask for ID and give you a passcard for your room.
  • You can also sign up for events and tours at reception.

Vibe & People

  • The quality of the guests was a definite highlight, and the opportunity to meet and party with interesting travelers from around the globe is something I still fondly remember to this day.
  • Although this is a party hostel, parties do not appear to take place within the premises as people usually head out to the Jewish district to party.

Room

  • The comfort level of the 8-bed room was on par with other hostels.

Bed

  • The beds were basic but clean, featuring a lamp and a socket, though no privacy curtain or item tray.

Locker

  • The lockers were small, so I could only store my backpack and laptop inside and my luggage outside.
  • I spent 10 minutes figuring out the funky opening mechanism (hint: you have to push the button with your card).

Bathroom

  • The room came with a private bathroom that was decent in terms of both cleanliness and size. While it wasn't particularly remarkable, it got the job done.

Kitchen

  • The building only has one kitchen, located on the ground floor. The kitchen is quite large, modern, and well-equipped, with all the necessary appliances including an oven. It would even be suitable for recording footage for a cooking show if desired.
  • I had the nicest impromptu dinner here with some travelling Canadians.

Miscellaneous

Organized Events & Bar Crawls

  • You can sign up for some great bar crawls at the reception. I tried it with my roomies I just met, and it was a blast!
