If you're planning a trip to Budapest and feeling overwhelmed with choosing a hostel, I'm here to help!

I stayed at eight different hostels in Budapest, including Avenue Hostel.

This article presents my review of Avenue Hostel Budapest, which I ranked as the third-best hostel on my best hostels list based on my personal experience.

Summary — Avenue Hostel Budapest Review

Who is this hostel for?

  • For budget-conscious travelers, this hostel in Budapest is the perfect option. You can save on both accommodation and food here.

What was the best part of staying here?

  • Besides saving much money on accommodation and food, I liked dinner the most. I had a complementary chili con carne after spending 3€ at the bar.
  • They have different meals every night, which is especially beneficial considering the high food inflation rate in Hungary.

What was the worst part of staying here?

  • Although nothing was particularly terrible, the hotel was quite average and nothing stood out as great.
  • It's situated at a busy intersection, lacks privacy curtains for the bed, and the cleanliness of the bathrooms was just okay.

Did I enjoy my stay here? Would I return?

  • I prefer Maverick Urban Lodge over Avenue hostel, which is similarly cheap (without the free meals), but has better quality of life.

How much does it cost? Is it good value for money?

  • Avenue Hostel is an exceptionally affordable hostel, with prices starting at just 8€ per night.
  • Additionally, guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast and dinner meal if they spend 3€ at the bar.

Summary & Overall Impression

Avenue Hostel is the go-to hostel for budget-conscious travelers seeking significant savings on both accommodation and meals in Budapest.

The hostel's key selling point is its budget-friendly offerings. Starting at just 9€ per night, guests can enjoy free breakfast and discounted dinner meals with a minimum 3€ bar spend. This arrangement is particularly enticing in light of Hungary's high food inflation.

While Avenue Hostel doesn't offer luxury, it delivers practicality and affordability. Its modest offerings are balanced by its wallet-friendly pricing, making it a solid choice for budget-focused travelers

📝 Editor's note: The 10-bed "veiled" room I stayed in, along with its shared bathrooms, was not great. However, the rest of the hostel offers way nicer rooms with 4-8 or 12 beds, though they are more expensive. In this light, this hostel deserves a more favourable consideration than what I gave it here.

Location

  • Its central location in the 6th District near Oktogon offers easy access to the nightlife, Andrássy Avenue and public transport options.

Noise Levels

  • You can expect typical hostel noises from other guests. There's high street noise from the a busy avenue nearby, so earplugs are mandatory.

Check-in

  • The front desk at this hostel is open 24/7 for your convenience, so you can check in anytime. You'll need to show your ID or passport at check-in and receive your passcard.
  • With your passcard, you can access your room or sign up for events and tours at the reception.

Vibe & People

  • Guests here enjoy a complemenetary breakfast and discounted dinner for 3€ bar spend.
  • You'll have the opportunity to share casual meals with anyone you find interesting at the mess hall during the aformentioned meals.
  • You can also sign up for drink games, events and tours at reception.

Room

  • The standard rooms are equipped with a veil in the middle for a semblance of privacy, metal framed beds and item lockers.

Bed

  • I didn't have much privacy in my 10-bed room since beds have no curtains. However, I found out that there are better room options with beds that have curtains already installed.
  • Overall, the bed itself was decent - it had a light and socket, but no item tray. It was was clean and had a sturdy metal frame.

Locker

  • There was a locker that was a suitable size for my laptop and backpack, but my luggage was too big to fit inside at the same time.
  • Padlocks are available at the reception for a reasonable price.

Bathroom

  • The cleanliness and comfort of the two shared bathrooms in our living quarters were mediocre.
  • One bathroom was poorly designed with the shower located next to the toilet, causing it to get wet. The other bathroom was spacious but didn't seem very hygienic.
  • There were at least 20 people for two 1-person bathrooms, so people had to wait for their turn.
  • The rooms without veils have better bathroom facilities!

Kitchen

  • The main kitchen is perfect in all aspects. There were additional kitchens on each floor.
